This is my grandfather. He was born in 1876, and he was maybe in his 20s here, so I’d date the photo around early 1900s. He was a performer in Vaudeville (so I’ve been told), and he was born in a small town in New Hampshire. Both his parents were French-Canadians.
This Bulgarian solider was at different points in his life, an Orthodox monk, a teacher, and a member of the Bulgarian legion, a revoloutionary group whose goal was to liberate their homeland from the Ottoman empire. Six years after this picture was taken, Levski was captured and executed by Ottoman officials.
His Wiki lists his occupation simply as “Revolutionary.” Damn.
